• AG Jepsen: Connecticut Joins FTC and Pennsylvania AG in Enforcement Action against Alleged Tech Support Scam

  A federal court has granted a request to shut down a tech support scam operating out of Essex, Conn., and two locations in Pennsylvania that allegedly scammed consumers out of more than $17 million by pretending to represent Microsoft, Apple and other major tech companies, Attorney General George Jepsen said today.

• AG Jepsen, Consumer Counsel Katz: Settlement with Electric Supplier Will Provide $2.6 Million in Support for Operation Fuel

  Under a settlement agreement filed with the state Public Utilities Regulatory Authority today, electric supply company North American Power LLC will pay $2.6 million to the nonprofit Operation Fuel, Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz announced.

  In a newly reported scam targeting older adults, callers demand money immediately to free a kidnapped relative and threaten physical harm to the relative if funds are not delivered, Attorney General George Jepsen and Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jonathan A.   Attorney General George Jepsen and state Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jonathan A. Harris are advising Connecticut residents who may be holding gift cards, certificates or store credits to the electronic retail establishment RadioShack to use their gift cards as soon as possible. The company recently filed bankruptcy and has announced plans to close stores in Connecticut as early as February 17 and as late as March 31 of this year.

  Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill and Attorney General George Jepsen today announced that during Fiscal Year 2015, a joint effort by their offices resulted in the collection of nearly $1.8 million in penalties from out-of-state companies operating in Connecticut without legal authority to transact business.

• AG Jepsen: Connecticut Joins $71M Multistate Settlement with AMGEN Resolving Deceptive Marketing Allegations

  Attorney General George Jepsen today announced that Connecticut has joined with 47 other states and the District of Columbia in a $71 million settlement with biopharmaceutical company AMGEN, Inc. to resolve allegations that the company unlawfully promoted two biologic medications, Aranesp and Enbrel.

• AG Jepsen Joins Colleagues in Urging Phone Carriers to Offer Call-Blocking Technology Customers

  Attorney General George Jepsen has joined 44 other state attorneys general in urging five major telephone companies to offer their customers call-blocking technology to assist them in avoiding unwanted robo-calls. In a letter sent to the chief executives of the carriers, the attorneys general stated that a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule clarification actually allows telecommunication service providers to offer customers the ability to block unwanted calls. Telephone companies previously claimed that federal law administered by the FCC prohibits them from implementing existing technologies to block robocalls.

  Attorney General George Jepsen has sent letters to executives at the computer technology company Lenovo Group Ltd. and the software company Superfish seeking information about software pre-installed on Lenovo personal computers and sold to consumers that could potentially expose them to hackers.
